Installing a green roof on a garden shed is a sustainable and attractive way to enhance the roof. There are several important steps to consider to ensure the green roof is safe, durable, and functional.
1. Preparation of the garden house roof
Load-bearing capacity check : Check whether the roof of the garden house can support the additional load of a green roof. An extensive green roof weighs approximately 50–150 kg/m², depending on the structure and moisture content. An URBAN ONE should therefore be ordered with a roof load increase of 300 kg per m².
2. Structure of the green roof system
The greening takes place in several layers:
Root protection film: This prevents plant roots from damaging the roof. It is placed directly on the roof.
Drainage and storage layer: This layer ensures water drainage and simultaneously stores water for the plants. It often consists of special drainage panels made of plastic or gravel.
Filter fleece: The fleece prevents soil from entering the drainage layer and clogging it.
Substrate layer: Use a light, nutrient-poor substrate specifically designed for green roofs. The substrate depth is typically 5–15 cm, depending on the plants used.
3. Planting
Plant selection : Robust, low-maintenance plants such as sedum, grasses, herbs, and mosses are suitable for extensive green roofs. They require little water and maintenance.
Sowing or rolling mats : Plants can be laid out as pre-grown mats or sown as seeds.
4. Care and maintenance
Watering: In the initial phase (approx. 6-8 weeks), regular watering is important until the plants have taken root.
Remove weeds: Check the roof about 1-2 times a year for weeds or unwanted plants.
Refill substrate: If necessary, you can add substrate.
